Think Spring!

I submitted a story last week that will appear in the March Green and Growing Issue of DESOTO MAGAZINE about Petals from the Past Garden and Resource Center in Jemison, Alabama. Steve and I visited for the first time recently so I could do my research. We had some great chats with owners and staff members and took the opportunity to attend a workshop "Growing Small Fruits in the Home Garden" taught by Dr. Arlie Powell, Professor Emeritus from Auburn University.

I can't say enough about this wonderful place and look forward to returning for lots of plants this spring. Dr. Powell's son Jason and his wife Shelley are the official owners of the garden center. Both have degrees in horticulture from Texas A & M. This Powell family KNOWS so much about plants and how to grow them in the best possible ways. And, they're eager to share their knowledge with the gardeners they encounter.

(Steve and Mrs. Gwen Powell "talking seeds.")

The website, PetalsfromthePast.com, lists a number of upcoming workshops. Check it out for one or more that might pique your interest.

Dr. Powell specializes in fruit trees and plants. Jason's passion is heirloom plants, especially antique roses, and Shelley is known for her amazing ability to identify plants. Dr. Powell's wife Gwen contributes to the whole operation with her homemade jams and preserves made from fruits grown at the center. The gift shop has an impressive selection of seeds, garden tools, decor, and gift items. I brought several treasures home.

It takes about 2 hours to get to Jemison from Hartselle, AL. Take I-65 South to Exit 219 toward Thorsby/Jemison, and Petals from the Past is about a mile and a half from the exit. If you can't make it in person, they'll be glad to ship plants to your door.

I'll share my magazine story when it comes out, but in the meantime, put this amazing place on your must-visit list. My photos don't do it justice, because I was there in January. The colors beginning in March and April are bound to be spectacular.
