It seems to me that for the foreseeable future, folks will be more likely to take short road trips rather than board a plane or a cruise ship for faraway places. Fortunately, there are a number of very interesting towns only a few hours away which I can happily recommend for you to explore, especially if you want to venture in directions other than the Smoky Mountains or the Gulf of Mexico.
One I really enjoyed not long ago was LaGrange, Georgia. Here are 4 posts that I wrote about it covering subjects such as great eateries, the Biblical History Center, culture, entertainment and a beautiful estate home and gardens belonging to the Callaway family (as in Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, GA). Plus, I wrote stories for other publications, and you'll find those links with lots of photos there as well.
Here is a summary article I wrote for Short Weeks-Long Weekends:
My review of Taste of Lemon for TheYums.com:
My review of Mare Sol for TheYums.com:
For lodging, here's my review of Courtyard by Marriott on the square in LaGrange:
A review of Wingate Inn by Wyndham for Trip101.com is here:
See? I've done all the research for you. Just check out the articles I've linked and start planning your own visit to LaGrange. Their tourism motto is "Be Surprised!" I was, and I believe you will be, too.
